Future Rhythm Machine drops this May. The title is a reference to the British-Ghanian writer Kodwo Eshun, who “disputes the western futurist pre-occupation with noise in favour of rhythm.” He continues: “it is the rhythm machine which joins the dots between all music of the black Atlantic from afrobeat and highlife to techno, soul and hip-hop… I have always been drawn to the rhythm or groove of any piece of music, much more so than lyrical content for example. When I listen to African music I hear new rhythms, new possibilities and a glimpse into another world.”

Future Rhythm Machine clocks in at just over 30 minutes, and features all new productions. Guest appearances come in the form of Chilean Mamacita, Esa and Sensu.

However the aforementioned wild man Kaos didn’t show and we were instead treated to an 7 hour set from all round good guy Tiago. Having already been a fan of his productions for the likes of DFA, ESP Institute and Golf Channel we were blown away by Tiago’s extended selection of house cuts from the resident at Lisbon’s premiere nightclub, Lux. With such a mass market of DJ mixes circulating nowadays its refreshing to hear one as fine as this without any idea of what the tracks are. We’d love to find out, but we’re just as content to keep them a mystery. Enjoy.

We managed to catch up with Etienne for a few questions;

Tell us a bit about the mix.

It’s just a mix of what I’m listening to at the moment! I love so much early electronic music. Very experimental in the late of 60’s (Mother Mallard), Psychedelic in the 70’s (Eroc), Dark in the 80’s (Severed Heads)… On this mix I try to make feel people dance…

Carl Craig produced your debut album, how did that come about?

It was an idea of Gilbert (the boss on my label Versatile) after he listened to the first track of my album he found a connection between my sound and what happened in Detroit in the 80’s, so asked Carl Craig if he wanted to mix it and after listening he accepted!

Your liveshow is one of the most inspriational I’ve seen in a long while – like a sonic one-man-band, do you have any intentions to recruit further members? A drummer perhaps? Or keep things the way they are?

I’ve got another band called ZOMBIE ZOMBIE with a drummer (Cosmic Neman) In a way it’s easier to make music alone, you can do what you want. I don’t yet feel the limits of my installation, so I keep playing like that…

What’s in the pipeline with solo stuff?

I’ve just released some remixes, but it’s now the moment to release the new album of ZOMBIE ZOMBIE… I’m still on tour…

Can we expect anything from Zombie Zombie soon?

An EP will be out in September with 5 covers of John Carpenter. It’s produce by Joakim and La Boca designed the cover.
